  3. art's sake' - that is, art as
  4. self-sufficient, not needing to justify its
  5. existence by serving any particular use.
  6. Artists associated with the movement include
  7. Beardsley and Whistler. The writer Oscar
  8. Wilde was in his twenties an exemplary
  9. aesthete. The idea of art for art's sake was
  10. current in Europe throughout the 19th
  11. century, but the English movement in the last
  12. two decades tended to advocate extremes of
  13. sensibility, which attracted much ridicule.
